People assume I am the one who caught them. I am the one who arrived. There is a difference, and I have had three decades to get comfortable with it.

These days I survey houses for people going away over the holidays — which, if you have read anything about that December, you will understand is not a coincidence.

Sergeant, Winter Shift

  • Lead officer of record on the December 1990 holiday break-ins — fourteen homes across three villages, every one of them empty for the holidays.
  • Identified the pattern in week two: the houses had all been called at, during the day, by two men who did not come back until the family had flown.
  • The arrest was not mine. A call came in on Christmas Eve from a house on the 600 block. It was made by a child. I drove to the address and I have spent thirty years explaining that this is the whole of my contribution.
  • Co-wrote the department’s holiday vacancy checklist, still in use, still largely ignored.
